Lori's Best Lactation Cookie Recipe

Lactation Cookies... And a word about milk supply.

Yes, I have a fabulous cookie recipe. It is well-baked, and refined by my good friend, Laura, one of the best lactation consultants I've ever worked with. Cookies? Fun! And yummy. But.

But; nothing takes the place of effective and frequent milk removal in making more breastmilk. If I had a dollar for every momma looking for the magic juju for a good milk supply, I wouldn't be writing this. Or I would be; on a beach! In our culture of a pill or an herb or a cookie fixes everything, it's easy to imagine that is the answer. It's not.

And the number one reason moms stop breastfeeding? Perceived low supply. That right, I used the word "perceived". For some reason, a momma might think "I don't have enough milk", because of what she's able to pump. Or she doesn't see it gushing out, or.... A million-bazillion other reasons. Her partner, or mom says... Or her friend is doing....And her milk supply might just be fine. Get a balanced and expert assessment; from a wise IBCLC.

That said, there are foods that support better lactation and milk synthesis. They can be used as an adjunct to effective milk removal, to support lactation. They just aren't the end-all-be-all. Or magic juju. And on a busy day, when Laura would come back from facilitating support group, and sneak me some of these, they WERE my magic juju... Cause they're so yum. A couple a day can't hurt:)

If you have supply concerns or need more of a supplement discussion, please give me a call, email or text.

Mommas Milk-n-Cookies

Disclaimer: no men, children or ladies "over a certain age" will lactate if eating these. I promise. They just might eat them all on you.

1 cup butter (Laura tried it with margarine, they were kinda yucky. She also recommends softened butter if you can swing it)
1 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar
4 T water
2 T flaxseed meal (no substitutions)
2 large eggs
1 tsp. Vanilla
2 cups flour
1 tsp. Baking soda
1 tsp. salt
3 cups thick cut oats
1 cup chocolate chips (you have some leeway here, raisins, dried cranberries, peanut butter chips)
2 T Brewers Yeast (no substitutions)

Lactation Cookie Recipe Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees

  2. Mix 2 T flaxseed meal and water, set aside 3-5 minutes.

  3. Mix butter and sugar

  4. Add eggs.

  5. Stir flaxseed mix into butter mix, and add vanilla.

  6. Beat until well blended

  7. Sift dry ingredients except oats and chocolate chips. ( or whatever add in )

  8. Add butter mix to dry ingredients

  9. Stir in Oats and then chocolate chips

  10. Drop onto parchment paper on cookie sheet

  11. Bake 8-12 minutes. Laura says watch them carefully, burned ones aren't so yummy.
